Visit the Vasa Warship Museum in Stockholm, Sweden

Vasa meets her final destiny in August 1628

Vasa initiated her maiden voyage on the 10th of August 1628, leaving the quay situated in central Stockholm in what is today known as the Old Town at Skeppsbron. But just a few minutes later something goes terrible wrong. Vasa starts to tilt more and more and she finally capsizes a few hundred meters from its quay. At least thirty sailors died in this catastrophe, but some material from this time indicates that up to 150 lives were spilled.

Sweden was a Baltic Sea superpower at the time Vasa was built, and the huge Vasa ship was supposed to become a symbol of Sweden and its influence. Documentation from this time tells us that the ship costed 200.000 riksdaler which would equal an enormous 5% of the total Swedish budget at that time.

A shipwright from Holland was brought in to lead the Wasa project. It seems that due to occasional miscalculations Vasa was not given the appropriate center of gravity. One factor behind this could be that the Swedish king at some point ordered that extra cannons were to be installed on upper gun deck. The extra ballast added was obviously not enough to keep Vasa in an upright position.

The captain of the ship was immediately sent to jail but soon to be freed due to lack of evidence. One interesting point regarding the aftermath of the Vasa catastrophe was that No one was ever found guilty and sentenced.

The warship ended its short duty 32 meters below the surface. Very soon most of the cannons were recovered by divers using a bell type of vehicle in order to submerge. But after that it seems that no one ever visited the ship until the 1950´s when the swede Anders Franzén initiated a salvage project. Then, in 1961, the ship was miraculously brought back to the surface, intact after more than 330 years on the bottom.

The fact that the Baltic Sea is free from shipworm explains the fact that the oak wood was preserved during all this time. Vasa is one of the best preserved 1700th century vessels in the world.

Despite the fact that this ship was resting on the bottom of the sea for more than 300 years, the ship and many of its artifacts are very well preserved. Even food and liquors were found of which some was consumed after the salvage in 1961.

The conservation of the wood and the rest of the materials has been a challenge. The oak wood has been trated with polyethylene glycol, but sources tell that staff at the Vasa Museum is continously testing new ways of preserving the wood.

The Vasa Museum is situated at Djurgården in central Stockholm, and is really a "must-see" museum if you´re visiting Stockholm, the beautiful capital of Sweden.

Attractions in Helsingborg - Sweden

Helsingborg is another major tourist destination in Sweden. It is the place to go if you are looking forward to a full immersion in cultural delights, bask in the beauty of stunning gardens and survey several centuries-old buildings.

There is no better place to start your Helsingborg tour than from its namesake castle. From the site of the Helsingborg Castle, follow the archway steps that will lead you to the city center. Do be mindful of your surroundings and make necessary stops along the way to fully enjoy the spectacular view of the harbor it affords. As you find yourself in the center of the city, at the main square of Stortoget, you will find the medieval keep of Karnan. The tower is the only structure left of the 14th century castle that once stood here. You can climb up the tower to catch sight of the city's panorama with the sparkling harbor at the background.

From Karnan, you can pass by Fredriksdal's Open Air Museum. It was once a proud 18th century mansion that was transformed into a beautiful museum. Aside from the rare species of plants in its impressive botanical gardens, it also houses farm animals, old houses and a printing museum in the area. It is a great place for the entire family to visit. You will not only enjoy the wonderful gardens and interesting exhibits, you will also learn a lot during your visit. You may also want to cross the short distance from Fredriksdal to Tropikariet. It is a small zoo where you can interact with some exotic animals sans the cages.

For another interesting museum experience, check out Dunkers Kulturhus or the Dunker's Culture House. The museum's exhibits and art galleries are not the only reason for making a stopover. It also hosts various concerts that you might find worth watching. However, if you are looking for a livelier concert scene, you can check out Tivoli where exciting local and foreign bands usually give the audience a great time.

If you are interested in old churches, you can visit the 14th century church of Sankta Maria Kyrka, which served as a haven for plenty of herring fishermen back in the Middle Ages. There is also Raus Kyrka which dates back to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest churches in the country.

Of course, you can't miss the crowning glory of all Helsingborg attractions. It is the 19th century Sofiero Castle. Its oceanfront location adds to its charm and romance. However, it is the castle's rhododendrons which make the area the most visited and easily the most favorite of visiting tourists. Timing is key if you want to fully appreciate the stunning beauty of these lovely blooms. Visit during early summer and you will see for yourself why the blooming plantation of rhododendron is a spectacle worth observing. You can also visit the modern art gallery while you are in the area.

Fishing in Swedish Lapland

Swedish Lapland is known for its fishing and many people come from far and wide to fish in its waters which are suitable for all types of fishing.  The area is full of rivers and lakes that are ideal for fishing for all types of fish.  The lakes and rivers are known for their purity and fine fishing along with some of the freshest air.  The grayling is high in numbers and the most popular sought after fish but there are other species such as the brown trout, whitefish, powan and coreganus spp.  The Tana River in Lapland is famous for its Salmon fishing and Salmon fisheries and the river Tana is known as the best Salmon River in Norway and Finland and the largest Salmon caught in 1929 weighed in at a massive 36lb. The Tana River is 348 kilometres long, which makes it the longest river in Lapland

In fact Swedish Lapland offers many unspoiled fishing waters that are full of different species of fish including the char, sea trout and big browns.  There are many activities going on in the summer months where you can become involved in some of the best fishing for miles around. , Many of the local guides know the areas like the back of their hands and will indulge you in a fishing adventure that you will never forget.

Thanks to local conservation work, the river Atran in sweden offers some of the best wild Salmon fishing. Fishing tales place right in the centre of town and you can fish for sea trout on the 1st March when the season begins. This spectacle draws in the attention of many anglers and bystanders. At the end of April, beginning of May the fresh run Salmon is the catch of the day and by mid June the catch is usually the smaller Salmon and the Grisle which enters the river at about this time.  This great fishing can be enjoyed right until late September when the season closes to allow for spawning.  The river Atran situated in Falkenburg is located right at the river mouth and is an area that is steeped in tradition and history. There are some great places to stay such as hotels and camp sites and there is also some great accommodation that is situated right by the river.

Lapland and Sweden offer some great fishing and there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy your surrounding areas which are surrounded by beautiful countryside and local attractions.

One can also get the feel of urban living in its beautiful and sophisticated cities and at the same time one can feel the tranquility in the countryside. Sweden is full of charm with scenic medical villages, islands, lakes and forests dotting its landscape.

Sweden has a population of around 9 million and the official language is Swedish. Lapp is spoken by Sami people in the north. Most people speak English fluently and also many speak German and French.. It is customary not to drink until the host makes a toast. Smoking is prohibited in most public areas. It is also customary to say Tack for maten to the host after having a meal which means thanks for the food. Casual dress is acceptable for everyday wear and formal wear for social gatherings.

Stockholm – The biggest city and capital of Sweden and is one of the most beautiful cities of the world. The old town is a treat for your eyes and a walk around city's waterways and parks is an experience to cherish. Most visitors prefer walking around on foot and visit the medieval part of Gamla Stan. The city is basically constituted by archipelagos which are outstandingly scenic and can be explored by cruises.

Eating at restaurants in Sweden can be expensive. Too many times you looked at the bill only to start converting in my head to find I paid two or three times what I would have in the US. It's a horrible habit and one that I have to break. At the same time, it helps me to find meals that are worth eating without feeling like I've thrown away money as I convert from kronors to dollars.
